How to open a csv file with Excel

When downloading responses or comments from Starred, the file format is CSV.

CSV means comma-separated values. CSV files are delimited text files that use a comma to separate values.

Start with an empty spreadsheet

When opening the file with Excel, you can open an empty spreadsheet and import the file.

Open the Excel spreadsheet where you want to save the data and click the Data tab.

In the Get External Data group, select From Text.

In the next step, you will be asked to choose a how the data is separated in the file you're importing. Choose Delimited.

This step is crucial because in a csv file data with a comma, and by selecting Delimited here you'll prompt the software to divide the data into separate columns based on the delimiter.

In the next step, choose you delimiter (here, Comma) and you'll already see a preview of how the file will look like. Click Next

If you're opening it automatically, `Excel might already recognize the csv and divide the text into columns.

If the file still looks like this when you open it, then you can follow these steps to separate the data:

After opening the file, click on Data

Choose Text to Columns

You will be prompted to choose a separator, meaning to indicate to Microsoft Excel what to look for in the text to divide the text into columns. Choose Comma:
